background/context
Ellison’s background in Oklahoma influenced his perspective on the racial issues expressed in his writing. The state has been a very accepting and open to racial integration and Ellison has experienced a life with opportunities to gain a respectable education and have mentors regardless of color. This is why he expresses his own identity in his writing as an educated black man, the narrator, who is invisible because people refuse to see him. His experience is shown through the book in how he tries to explain how similar he is to white folk.
Personal
What did you like best about the story? The story is very interesting and has a very diverse plot, full of different exciting events. It takes a lot of twists and turns.
What did you like the least? While the plot was interesting and has the potential to be a very interesting story, the narrator seemed very naïve and made the story a lot blander.
If there was one thing you could change about the story, what would it be? If I could change any aspect of the story it would probably be the narrator as a character so that the plot advances in a more exciting way, therefore making it a more interesting read.
Would you recommend this book for others to read? Why or why not? Yes I would recommend it because it brings out a lot of ideas through the events that happen, and sheds light on the aspects society chooses to ignore.
